2020 Recipes
Over the weekend, I brainstormed and finalized a list of dishes that have played a significant role in my life -- and I removed names of dishes that I already knew how to make. Then, I texted them to my mom and asked her to rank them from easiest to most challenging -- considering the number of ingredients involved, the types of cooking methods to be utilized, and the time required to create the dish. Here are my choices and her ranking:
- Cá chiên (Fried whole fish)
- Bò kho (Braised beef stew)
- Bò và khoai Tây (Beef stir-fried with potatoes)
- Phở (Noodle soup)
- Cá kho tộ (Claypot fish)
- Canh chua (Mekong Delta sour soup)
- Bánh xèo (Crispy savory crepes)
- Bún bò Huế (Beef noodle soup)
- Goi cá tươi (Fresh fish wrapped in spring rolls)
- Mì Quảng (Quang Nam-style noodles)
- Chả giò (Egg rolls)
- Bánh beo (Savory steamed rice cakes)
- Bánh bột lọc (Savory tapioca dumplings)

You might notice that I have identified 13 instead of only 12 dishes. I have listed an extra one in case I have to bail on one of them for any particular reason. If I can persevere through them all, the extra recipe will be a jumpstart to my 2021 list.
This weekend, I will be cooking for two women who deeply inspire me. More information about them and this month's recipe in the next blog post. Although cá chiên is identified as the easiest dish to make, I will be preparing a dish that I know one of my guests holds near and dear to her heart.
I will also include a recording of my conversation with my mom about the first dish. As you listen to this recording, you may want to have an anchor image of my mother's adorability. Signifying our partnership moving forward, here is a picture of us.
